Aamir - Behind the Screen

“A person is like the moon, there’s always the part of the moon that he won’t let the others see” Anonymous

A couple of months ago, the behind-the-screen videos of one of the anchor, who was perceived as “anchor cum religious scholar”, in Pakistan, received huge attention from the masses. Before this disclosure of his “off-camera” self, the anchor held high stature in the eyes of many people. They respected him for his eloquence of speech, spiritual talks and supplications while hosting the religious shows. However, behind the screen, as soon as the camera went off, his eloquence in religious and spiritual talks converted into vulgar and abusive language. In the circulated videos, he made fun of the callers, asked the religious scholars about Bollywood movies, described the heroine in a perverted manner and used abusive and vulgar language. For more than a month, people constantly shared the videos and expressed their disgust and disapproval towards his acts and satisfied the thirst of their tongues. Nobody talked about the lesson the incident has for all of us.

Alphonse Karr once rightly said that “every man has three characters - that which he exhibits, that which he has, and that which he thinks he has”. We all have a personality which is hidden, in which, we, as humans, commit mistakes, sometimes slip from the right path and sometimes do hideous sins. But most of the time we keep this side of ours as hidden as possible because we will be ashamed if it is disclosed in public. We would not be able to face people if they would know how we talk, act and behave when the ‘cameras’ go off. The language we use when we are with our friends, our jokes, our topics of discussions, the backbiting, the times when we sin knowing that nobody is looking at us, we want all of this to remain concealed. The personality that we exhibit and, based on which, the honor and respect we receive from people will burn into ashes if our hidden sins are revealed to human beings.

I felt bad for the anchor because his sin was revealed. The anchor’s name is also Aamir and after watching the video, I felt that it could be Aamir Amin, but Thank God it wasn’t me. The only difference between Aamir Amin and that Aamir is that the sins of the later were revealed and former’s sins are still concealed. Many must have forgotten the incident, but the incident should have been an eye opener for all of us. We might still slip, we might still err or commit sins, but we should fear the time when our sins will be revealed whether in this world, or in His court on the Day of Judgment. It will be a moment of shame. Rather than spreading and discussing other’s sin, we all should take refuge in God, for this to happen to us, for we all are human and prone to err but nobody of us would like his sins to be revealed.

I pray to God, to conceal my sins in this world and hereafter. To prevent the shame I can face if my sins are revealed and to rectify my mistakes before it is too late. I pray to God to enable me to conceal people’s mistakes and sins and to avoid discussing them with others to satisfy the thirst of my tongue. Amen

Wherever you are, be a source of comfort, love and happiness for fellow creatures.
